924S/931 "Gulf" race-car project
Thought I throw some pics about my track car project that I've been working on since December 2007. I bought the shell with roll-cage and paint-job done from my Latvian friend Alfreds. He raced it with 924 NA engine (built with 931 head and VEMS efi by me) and decided to make a new and more powerful track car of his 951.
Here are the specs of this car:
931 engine with VW flat-tops, K27/29 hybrid, Holbert/GTR intercooler, ITB intake, 630cc Siemens Deka injectors and Bosch 044, will be running E85.
931 dog-leg gearbox, alloy rear arms, custom solid aluminium anodized mounts, Racers Edge uniball A-arm mounts, 951S brakes all around, BBS RS 16x8 and 16x9 forged 3piece wheels.
Dash is covered with black alcantara, I'm using stock gauges+LCD display for VEMS and two progressive shift-lights.
For some reason this car has late-style windshield.
Some pics:
In it's previous life with NA engine:
Custom rear suspension mounts and 951S caliper adapters made by me. BTW mounting bolts are safety-wired:
New crossmember made in order to mount oil cooler, Holbert/GTR intercooler and 951 radiator:
Engine went in onthe last day of 2008:
Nicest thing about the engine seems to be powder-coated engine mounts with Vibratechnics race bushings.
Heat insulation tape is crapily installed but I won't keep the stock exaust manifold for too long either.

I've been a bit busy in a last few days.
Finally put the intake together, soon it will be welded also and fabricated the intercooler end-tanks.
Seems familiar?
A bit rusty front discs:
and not rusty rear ones:

More pics of the progress. Slowly crawling to the target: start the engine and then get the inspiration to get it on the track as soon as the snow goes away.
Intercooler in place:
Vacuum manifold for ITB's:
Fitted rear wheels, since they are 9" wide and ET36 (also alloy rear arms), fenders need some "rolling" with 5kg hammer

We have only one true race-track at Audru, near Pärnu, but I'm planning going to Riga (Bikerniki), Kaunas (Kacergine) and perhaps Finland (Ahvenisto).
I'm planning to get at least 370-380 hp but we'll see. Engine should withstand this without a hitch but I'm not too optimistic about the turbo, maybe I have to change it out to something more modern.

Fitted the gas tank. As I was cleaning it, I measured the stock in-tank pump capacity and it's more than enough: 230 lph.
Intake plumbing complete, just need to buy some silicone hose connections:

Re: 924S/931 "Gulf" race-car project
Hello to all!
No updates for quite some time, but athe car drives and even though few issues need to be sorted out (need solid camber plates for front struts, new clutch which I'm changing right now), it drives well. and car is pretty fast.
I'm in the process of fabricating tubular exhaust manifold and I'll use Holset HX35 with twin-pulse turbine next season. The main reason for new manifold (and new turbo at the same time) is extremely poor access to oil lines, filter etc with stock 931 exhaust manifold.
And since I have 4 Porsches at the moment (white 924 2.5 16v turbo, turbocharged 2.0 red 924, 931 Gulf and '78 911) I will sell two of them. 931 Gulf is for sale and my red turbocharged 924.
Here's few photos of the car:

Re: 924S/931 "Gulf" race-car project
Wow. I had missed this thread. Awesome colors on the car. I was going for the Gulf theme originally but changed my mind...
Damn you for almost changing it back!
Hmm... I wonder if it would be possible to register a 924 with a 2.5l turbo engine in Sweden...

Re: 924S/931 "Gulf" race-car project
I don't know about Sweden, but judging by some cars that are in Sweden, mods they have and they are in regular traffic, I'd guess it is possible. 2,5liter engine is sort of native engine for 924 as 924 S got one from the factory. In Estonia we can put on any engine that was offered for the same model lineup and I could put on the 2,5liter NA legally, though cannot turbocharge it Installing 931 engine is perfectly legal, of course all engine swaps must be registered.
On the other hand, since our MOT is basically a joke concerning serious mods, I'll do it anyway. It passes smog test with flying colours.
EDIT: I fixed the links to photos (domain change from .ee to .org).

Re: 924S/931 "Gulf" race-car project
Well, if it had been an older car, it would've been possible without a doubt, but after '75 it needs to be an engine that was specified for the specific chassie... So 2.5N/A is no problem and 2.0Turbo is no problem... 2.5Turbo though... At least I think so.Raceboy wrote:I don't know about Sweden, but judging by some cars that are in Sweden, mods they have and they are in regular traffic, I'd guess it is possible. 2,5liter engine is sort of native engine for 924 as 924 S got one from the factory.
